Now I’m Open

Meet like-minded people in Hanoi

On your own in Hanoi? Check in for the days you're there, say what you're open to, and other travellers and locals who chose to be seen can ask to join. They see your city, never your exact spot.

Hanoi charms solo travellers with its atmospheric Old Quarter, French colonial architecture, egg coffee and some of Vietnam's best street food. It is the main jumping-off point for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and the northern mountains, so you will meet plenty of travellers planning the same trips. Travellers gather in the Old Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake and Ta Hien beer street, while expats favour the lakeside Tay Ho (West Lake) area.

Meeting people in Hanoi: what works

  • Stay in the Old Quarter, where social hostels run free walking tours, beer nights and trips to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.
  • Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake on weekend evenings, when the surrounding streets become pedestrian-only and full of locals.
  • Join free student-led city tours, where young Hanoians practise their English while showing you around.
  • Book a group trip to Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh or Sapa to travel with others.

Stay safe

Cross roads slowly and steadily so motorbikes can flow around you, and agree prices first or use Grab to avoid taxi overcharging.

Meet in public places, tell a friend where you’re going, and never send money to someone you met online.
