Now I’m Open

Meet like-minded people in Chiang Mai

On your own in Chiang Mai? Check in for the days you're there, say what you're open to, and other travellers and locals who chose to be seen can ask to join. They see your city, never your exact spot.

Chiang Mai is one of the world's favourite bases for solo travellers and digital nomads, with hundreds of temples, mountain scenery, cooking schools and a low cost of living. The vibe is laid-back and community-minded, with plenty of co-working spaces, yoga classes and night markets. Travellers cluster inside the moated Old City and in the café-filled Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) area.

Meeting people in Chiang Mai: what works

  • Stay in the Old City near Tha Phae Gate or in Nimman, where social hostels and co-working spaces make meeting people easy.
  • Go to the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road or the Saturday market on Wua Lai Road to explore and chat with fellow travellers.
  • Join a group day trip or a Thai cooking class, which are among the easiest ways to meet people here.
  • Hike up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep via the Monk's Trail with others, starting early to beat the heat.

Stay safe

Air quality can be very poor during burning season from about February to April, so check the AQI, and wear a helmet if you rent a scooter.

Meet in public places, tell a friend where you’re going, and never send money to someone you met online.
