Now I’m Open

Meet like-minded people in Tokyo

On your own in Tokyo? Check in for the days you're there, say what you're open to, and other travellers and locals who chose to be seen can ask to join. They see your city, never your exact spot.

Tokyo is one of the easiest and safest big cities in the world to explore alone, with endless food, neighbourhoods and culture to discover. Solo dining is completely normal, and izakayas, standing bars and karaoke make it easy to socialise once you find your people. Travellers gather in Shibuya and Shinjuku, especially around Golden Gai's tiny bars, and in more laid-back neighbourhoods like Shimokitazawa and Asakusa.

Meeting people in Tokyo: what works

  • Stay in a social hostel in Asakusa, Ueno or Shinjuku, many of which run bar nights and walking tours.
  • Join a free volunteer-guided walking tour or a food tour, which are an easy way to meet people quickly.
  • Try a bouldering gym, a popular hobby in Tokyo with friendly communities in many neighbourhoods.
  • Visit Golden Gai in Shinjuku, where small bars seat just a handful of people and conversations happen naturally; note some charge a cover fee.

Stay safe

Tokyo is very safe, but check the time of the last train (usually around midnight) so you are not stranded, and avoid touts in Kabukicho who steer visitors into overpriced bars.

Meet in public places, tell a friend where you’re going, and never send money to someone you met online.
