Volunteering

Do some good with new people in Singapore

Volunteering is a good way to meet people, but turning up alone the first time can feel daunting. Post a card on Now I'm Open, find someone nearby to sign up with, and go together.

Good places to meet

  • Giving.sg: National platform where non-profits list volunteer roles. You can also track your volunteering history there.
  • SG Cares Volunteer Centres: One in each of Singapore's 24 towns, linking volunteers with local needs.
  • NParks Community in Nature: Sign up for tree planting, habitat work and citizen science surveys of birds, butterflies and dragonflies.
  • Willing Hearts: Soup kitchen that cooks thousands of meals a day. No special skills needed; sign up through its volunteer page.
  • Food Bank Singapore: Volunteer roles for different skills and schedules; sign up on its website.

Tips

  • Always sign up through the organisation itself. Turning up unannounced can leave a kitchen or event short of space.
  • Check any age, training or time requirements in the listing before you invite others.
  • Pick a shift that fits a regular slot in your week, so it is easy to keep going.
  • Meet your volunteering buddy somewhere public first, such as a coffee shop near the venue.
  • NParks citizen science surveys run on set dates each year, so watch the Community in Nature page.

Questions

Does Now I'm Open organise volunteering?

No. It helps you find someone to volunteer with. You sign up for the actual role through the charity or platform, such as Giving.sg.

I have never volunteered. Where do I start?

Try a one-off role with no special skills needed, such as a kitchen shift or a clean-up, and bring a buddy you met on the app.

Can I find people for a regular commitment?

Yes. Post a card saying you want a weekly or monthly slot, and look for people who want the same rhythm.
