Uni students in Singapore: find study buddies and weekend kaki

Lectures and clubs are a start, but it can still be hard to find someone for a study session or a weekend outing. Now I'm Open lets students aged 18 and over post a quick plan and meet others nearby who are open to it.

Good places to meet

  • Central Public Library: In the basement of the National Library Building near Bugis and Bras Basah MRT. Open 10am to 9pm, closed on public holidays.
  • Kent Ridge Park: Open 24 hours near Kent Ridge and Pasir Panjang MRT, with a 280m canopy walk through the forest.
  • Fort Canning Park: Hilltop park in town with a spice garden and heritage trails, open 24 hours.
  • Lakeside Garden, Jurong Lake Gardens: Free and open 24 hours, with running paths and lakeside lawns in the west.
  • Old Airport Road Food Centre: One of Singapore's oldest and largest hawker centres, by Dakota MRT.

Tips

  • Meet in a public place the first time, such as a library or hawker centre, and tell a friend where you are going.
  • Libraries are free to walk into. Borrowing needs NLB membership, which is free for citizens and has fees for PRs and most foreign pass holders.
  • Go to your university's orientation and club fairs as well. NTU, for example, lists over 300 student organisations.
  • Add a rough time and an area near campus so people on different timetables can join.
  • You must be 18 or over to use Now I'm Open.

Questions

Is Now I'm Open linked to my university?

No. It is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NUS, NTU, SMU, SUSS or any other institution.

Can I use it to find a study partner?

Yes. Post a Friends card with Study session as the activity, add the subject and a rough time, then choose from the people who say I'm in.

I'm an exchange student. Can I join?

Yes, if you are 18 or over. Language exchange and Explore the city cards are an easy way to meet people in your first weeks.
